HOLME LOSES A REAL FRIEND

Death of Mr. Richard Docker

The death occurred at Foxdale, Kendal, the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Pennington, on Monday, of Mr. Richard Docker, who for many years was manager of Holme Mills, and for more than half a century was Clerk to Holme Parish Council. His services to Holme were marked by a public presentation to him in April last.

The Gazette has received the following appreciation:

It is but a short time since the parishioners of Holme said their farewell to Mr. Richard Docker and gave expression to what must have been an outstanding record of devoted public service in his capacity as Clerk to Holme Parish Council for more than 50 years. Now we mourn his passing. It may be truly said that he was a real friend of the village, and many organisations had in some way or other felt the benefit of his fatherly advice and generous hand. His knowledge of local government and parish affairs in general was encyclopaedic. How his eye would light up and words wax eloquent when telling of earlier days and of how the “local parliament” fought for what the village needed. On the field of sport, Mr. Docker was a welcome spectator and staunch supporter. His prowess on the field of other days, his wealth of experience, his great sportsmanship and his critical eye must often have been of value to promoters of today. Above all we shall remember Mr. Docker as a great gentleman, and one who loved his fellow men. – Frank Lowis.
