HOLME’S FIRST MAY FESTIVAL

MAY QUEEN TOURED VILLAGE

Holme’s Happy Festival

The recent cold weather no doubt curtailed the attendance at the Holme May Day Festival, organised by the Youth Club and held on Thursday last week.

Before the crowning ceremony, the May Queen, Miss Dorothy Brown, who is aged 18 years (pictured centre), toured the village on a gaily decorated motor vehicle, being accompanied by her ladies-in-waiting – Miss R. Crump (right) and Miss S. Balmer (left) – and the flower girls – the Misses P. Mason, E. Herd, M. Burrows, E. Brown, K. Crowe and A. Burrows. Master C. Brown was the page.

On returning to a field kindly loaned by Mr. J. Burrows the May Queen was crowned by Mrs. E. Simpson.

A fancy dress parade was judged by Mesdames Crayston, Hewett and Walton, and the winners were: Prettiest – Joan Hayton, Gillian Crisp; original – Katrina Hornby, Sheila Hayton; comic – J. Hayton and D. Hayton.

Sideshows, children‟s sports and open-air dancing concluded the proceedings.
