MILNTHORPE PETTY SESSIONS
SATURDAY – Before Mr. E. H. Wilson, and Mr. J. Holme.
SINGULAR CHARGE OF STEALING A COAT
A special sitting of the Court was called for Saturday evening at five o’clock, to hear a charge of stealing against Wm. Morson, who was brought up in custody. – Robert Robinson said he lived at Clawthorpe Hall. He last missed the overcoat, produced, on the 22nd of September. It used to hang up in the lobby at Clawthorpe Hall. He saw it on Friday, in possession of the police. He gave over £2 for it, and now valued it 25s. – Police Constable Bell, stationed at Beathwaite Green, said he went to Tarn Green, Cartmel Fell, on Friday morning. He got possession of the coat, and then apprehended the prisoner, and charged him with stealing. He found the coat in the bedroom. He charged prisoner with stealing it. – Prisoner replied, “I did not steal it; it was lent to me by the servant girl, and I had to return it at Martinmas.” – Susanna High said she was a servant at Clawthorpe Hall, near Burton. She remembered 22nd September last. Prisoner was at Clawthorpe Hall. It was on a Sunday. He stayed till four o’clock, and came again about half-past-six, and stayed till three on Monday morning. When he left, it was raining very fast, and she lent him an overcoat. That was the coat produced. She told him it would have to come back again. There was no time stated. – By the Bench: I did not tell anyone I had lent the coat. Mr. Robinson asked about it. I said I knew nothing about it. The family did not know prisoner was in the house till three in the morning. – The Bench adjourned the case until Monday, but accepted bail in two £5 sureties. – On Monday before the same justices the case again came on for hearing, when prisoner pleaded not guilty. – There being no further evidence, the Bench said they had decided to dismiss the case on payment of cost. The girl’s costs were disallowed, and she was reprimanded by the Bench.
