JUBILEE DAY
The inhabitants of this village turned out right loyal to enjoy Jubilee day.  Large numbers were to be seen in the early morning climbing up the rocky sides of Farleton Knot to inspect the work of preparing the beacon fire, whilst in the village itself an active and energetic committee were engaged preparing for feast, sport, and dance.  Exactly at two o’clock a large field, lent by Mr. Cornthwaite, was thrown open, and racing, jumping, and various sports were indulged in, for which the committee, through the kindness of several residents and tradespeople, were enabled to offer substantial prizes, consisting of timepieces, albums, lockets, broaches, &c.  At a little after three the school bell was rung to announce tea, which was supplied at a small charge per head.  Several hundreds of the villagers partook of it, the tables being provided over by Mrs. Wilson of the Vicarage, Mrs. Shepherd, Mrs. Crosby, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Fowler, Mrs. Winter, Mrs. Mason Hall, Mrs. T. Jackson, the Misses Thompson, and others.  Each party commenced by the Vicar (Rev. H. Wilson) saying grace and finished by singing the National Anthem.  After tea the room was cleared for a free concert, arranged by Mr. Bulbeck (schoolmaster).  A large number availed themselves of the opportunity to hear it, and the room was crowded to excess.  In the meantime dancing had been commenced in the large room of the Commercial Inn, which was kept up until time to go to Farleton Knot to see the beacon lighted.  Hundreds of all ages ascended the Knot to witness such a view which many of them will not see again, and thus ended a day that will never be forgotten.  At the close of the concert, Mrs. Shepherd distributed prizes to the successful competitors at their sports.  Towards the close of the evening the Holme Brass Band returned from Burton, where they had been engaged for the day, and played some dance music.
