HUSBAND WHO “WENT VERY FUNNY”

At Milnthorpe Petty Sessions on Wednesday, Mr. Geoffrey Wilson, solicitor, Lancaster, applied for an order against John Philipson, mill foreman, Hailsham, Sussex, in consequence of the desertion of his wife and family since April 5, 1928, and, as an alternative, an order for maintenance for Mrs. Philipson and children under 14 years.  A letter from the defendant stated that he admitted desertion, and that he had paid 10s. a week which he was willing to continue. – Rebecca Philipson, 5, Holme Mill Cottages, Holme, said that she was married to the defendant at St. John’s Church, Lancaster, on October 12, 1901.  There were six children.  Her husband deserted her the day before Good Friday last, and she had not seen him since.  He never used to speak to her and “went very funny”.  He had never sent her any money, but 10s a week was sent to the mill to pay the house rent.  He was the head foreman at Holme Mills and received about £5 a week. – Ralph Philipson, son of the last witness, said that the
