A GHOST AT BURTON
LIGHTS UP THE ROAD
Two o’Clock in the Morning Appearance
“PASSES THROUGH” IRON GATE
A ghost is said to have appeared near Burton, and the report has been received with mixed feelings by the villagers.
The apparition was seen a short time ago by Mr. and Miss Metcalfe, of Deerslack Farm, about 2 a.m. in the morning as they were returning from a dance. Mr. Metcalfe stated that they were a bit suspicious and did not return to the spot to see if it was the work of a practical joker but they spoke to others of the occurrence on the following day.
A day or so ago the spectre was again seen, this time by a business man in Burton. Mr. H. F. Graves was proceeding home from business at Deerslack, on a push-cycle, when the “ghost” appeared. It travelled, he says, in front of him along the main Burton-Carnforth road for about 20 yards, and then turned across the road, and appeared to go through an iron gate.
In an interview with our representative Mr. Graves said that the apparition was so luminous that it “lit up” the road, and made his lamp appear dim. It looked just like a man with a sheet over his head.
Continuing, Mr. Graves said he returned to the village, and along with Mr. Casson, he visited the spot, hoping to find some trace of the spectre, but without avail.
On inspecting the gate through which he saw the apparition go, Mr. Graves found it secured with an iron chain, so that the gate could not have been unlocked. This is confirmed by Mr. Casson. The ground in the vicinity was wet, and ordinary footmarks would easily have been distinguishable, but none could be seen.
A party of local men waited for hours for the ghost to appear on several nights, most of them being armed with sticks, and one or two with guns, but no apparition was forthcoming.
“I questioned several villagers,” says our correspondent, “if there was a ghost legend in the vicinity, but they all answered ‘no’.”
The gate is on the high road giving access to a field about 150 yards from Deerslack Farm. There are no houses near the farm, and the gate is set in a thorn hedge, which is about four feet high.
