NATIVE OF HOLME SENTENCED
Three Months for Contemptible Theft
What was described by the Mayor of Morecambe as a “contemptible theft” was punished at Morecambe Police Court on Wednesday, by a sentence of three months’ hard labour passed on John Beck (22), motor driver, 14, Abbey Terrace, Scotforth, a native of Holme, who was in regular employment. He pleaded guilty to stealing 3s. from the clothing of Edmund Clarke, of Torrisholme while the latter was swimming in Bare Bathing Pool, on 13 August. Beck also asked that five other charges should be considered.
In consequence of complaints, a ten shilling note and a half-crown were marked by P.C. Bentley and placed in Clark’s trousers pocket by the lessee of the bathing pool, David Slinger. As Clark entered the water, Beck left, and was seen to go into No. 1 tent, and later into No. 9 tent. Clark missed the half-crown and sixpence in copper.
When challenged, he admitted the theft, and asked the Bench to take into consideration the following thefts:- Stealing 11s. the money of George Parkinson, 24, Beaumont Street, Skerton, at Bare Bathing Pool, on 6 August; stealing from a cash register till 20s., the money of John Walker, Crag View, Bolton-le-Sands, on 12 August; stealing 9s., the monies of George Burgin, 9, Quernmore Road, Lancaster, on 12 August; a gent’s silver watch, the property of some person not identified, but believed to be a Lancaster man, who bathed in the pool a fortnight ago; and also of stealing a 20s. note, the money of George Nicholson, at Conder Green Garage on 13 August.
His employer, Harry Reed, of Lancaster Sawmills, said he had always proved honest and trustworthy, and he was ready to take him back if he was bound over. If he was convicted he could not make any promises as the other men did not like it. He was going to be married.
Inspector Banks said Beck was a native of Holme, and started life as an errand boy for the Carnforth Co-operative Society. He was later employed by a coal supply Co. at Carnforth, but two years ago got work as a motor driver at the Lancaster Sawmill, where he had given every satisfaction.
Passing sentence, the Mayor said the magistrates were sorry they could not take into account the good record of the prisoner, because the public must be protected from thefts of this character. There were six charges which showed systematic contemptible thefts. People who left their clothes in bathing pools must be protected.
