KIRKBY LONSDALE v. HOLME
The annual Boxing Day encounter between Kirkby Lonsdale and Holme Wanderers was played at Kirkby Lonsdale this year. There has always been keen rivalry between these teams, and there was a good “gate” for Monday’s game. The game resulted in a win for Holme by 5 points to 3, which was a fair result. There was little to choose between the sides, although Holme were, if anything, slightly quicker off their mark, and made better use of their openings. They got possession of the ball more frequently from the scrums, but Kirkby Lonsdale kept the visitors at bay by smart tackling. There was heavy fog over the field during the match but visibility was never so bad as to prevent the game from being finished. The game started briskly and Holme were soon on the attack. Their efforts were held in check for a time, and Millburn was conspicuous with some excellent clearances. After 15 minutes, however, the visitors broke through and Hall went over near the posts for a try which Metcalfe converted. Shortly afterwards Metcalfe had to retire until after the interval with a knee injury. Kirkby Lonsdale set up a series of raids, and there were several neat passing bouts. The cramped working of the back division, however, prevented the game from being opened out to the best advantage.
The play continued as keenly in the second half as in the first, and the ball moved quickly from end to end. Both teams were forced to touch down on more than one occasion, and there were frequent scrummages on both lines. It was from a scramble that Kirkby Lonsdale registered their try, for Anderson got the ball over after repeated efforts on the part of the forwards. Burrows had hard luck in not adding the extra points which would have put the teams on level terms, the ball dropping just under the crossbar. Result – Holme Wanderers, one goal (5 points); Kirkby Lonsdale, one try (3 points).
