WEEK-END COACH TRIP HOME
Misuse of Petrol By Holme Driver
At Milnthorpe Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Alexander Smith, motor coach driver, lodging at Yew Tree, North Road, Holme, pleaded “Not Guilty” to three charges arising out of a week-end visit to Accrington with the motor coach which he drives daily to convey Italians at Bela River Camp to and from their work at Lune Mills, Lancaster. He was charged with driving away a motor coach without the owner’s authority between 10 and 11 November; using the coach at Burton when not covered by third party insurance; and with unlawful use of motor fuel on 11 November. He was represented by Mr. W. H. Winder, Lancaster.
Supt. Ridley said the motor coach, owned by the Mill Hill Garage Co., Blackburn, was under contract to the Ministry of War Transport.
Ralph Duckworth, secretary of the Mill Hill Garage Co., said defendant had been employed as a driver for six or seven months and had to use his own discretion regarding taking the vehicle to Blackburn if repairs were required. Defendant said on 10 November he set off to go to Lancaster, and because he was losing oil from the sump he fitted a washer at Lancaster. The vehicle was still not right, and he went on to Blackburn. As the garage there was closed he travelled a further four miles to his home at Accrington and returned the following day. He was allowed ten extra coupons by his employers on 9 November for that particular week for extra running for repairs necessitated by sump trouble, and produced a certificate from the firm to that effect. The magistrates dismissed the first two charges, but for unlawful use of fuel defendant was fined £5 and ordered to pay £1 12s. 6d. costs.
